Thinking about cloth physics

The important thing to note about cloth is that cloth is always dead weight. Unless a force is being acted upon it, the general direction that every part of the cloth is trying to approach is always down. Cloth material is flexible enough to conform to the shape of objects but strong enough to maintain its structure without falling apart. No mass is ever added or removed, so the consistency is key to making believable cloth.

In this example, clothing can Β have different types of fits depending on what you’re going for. The tighter the fit, the more creases you’re going to see and the more those creases follow the direction of the form. Using basic shapes will help keep the believability apparent and consistent. Clothes should seldom take away from the form and space of the object (or person) covering it. Many people make the mistake of drawing on clothing without consideration for the shape or body underneath it and that can ruin the structure of the drawing. Good structure is key!

Below is a demonstration showing different ways clothing can conform to the body based on tightness.

  • A - Basic form and structure of the body.
  • B - Tight fit clothing.
  • C - Loose fit clothing.

The key trick to understanding creases is contact/tension points. Creases will always stem from points of tension towards the ground unless acted upon by a force such as another contact point. The flexibility allows for a lot of leeway for creative liberty. There’s a lot of ways to screw it up but just as many ways to bullshit your way through it with enough practice. The more you draw cloth, the better general understanding you’ll have of the shape language.

Types of folds

While cloth is infinitely manipulatable, understanding the 7 different types of folds will help you get the better picture of what you should look out for in ultimately gripping its complex shape language.

  • 1 - Pipe fold: Pipe folds are created when the cloth is held up by a single point of contact. It creates cylindrical-like curved folds that stem downwards.
  • 2 - Diaper fold: This triangular type fold is typically created by two or more points of contact. Based on tension, the creases can have an angular rather than curved change of direction. This type of fold is very common in shirts.
  • 3 - Half-lock fold: Much like the Diaper fold, this fold is also often created by two points of contact, however the change of direction has much more emphasis. The best way to distinguish between the two is to imagine a hammock, the half-lock fold is more capable of holding something in it than a diaper fold.
  • 4 - Zigzag fold: Now we’re getting into the more free-form type of folds. This fold fits into the next and tends to flow in alternating directions. Commonly formed from loose cloth that sits on a surface from an initial point(s) of tension.
  • 5 - Spiral fold: Often found on sleeves, this tubular fold tends to spiral upwards or downwards in a twisting manner. Its less common to form if the cloth isn’t wrapped around a form.
  • 6 - Drop fold: Curtains, towels, blankets, shirts, you name it, this type of fold is created from irregular deformations when a cloth is held up and drooping off an object. Its far less dramatic than the other folds but its everywhere.
  • 7 - Inert fold: This one is extremely difficult. Trying to make sense of loose cloth on the ground is just a nightmare. Highest margin of error, but also modestly easy to BS. I still haven’t figured this one out but your best bet is to just use a reference if you’re stuck.

Materials

Last but not least, when drawing clothing it is important to figure out what kind of material you want to convey. Soft material incorporates a lot of curves in its creases and tends to flow freely. Hard material is far more stiff in nature and incorporates more β€œstraight” creases. Its important not to disregard the form of the shape when drawing hard materials; a lot of beginners draw straight lines on curved surfaces and this can ruin the believably.

Thin and thick materials can be both soft or hard. It should go without saying that the hardness of the cloth isnt affected directly by the thickness, (think thick wool sweater or thin aluminum foil if thats confusing.) Thin materials tend to fold and crease more than thick materials. These principles are great methods of getting the look and feel you’re looking for.
